Technology holds the key to overcoming the challenges of modern urban living and achieving goals such as reducing carbon footprints and easing traffic congestion with a series of successful pilot projects highlighting the potential of the smart city revolution.

A series of pilot projects in cities such as Dublin and New York are underlining the potential impact that technologies such as low cost motion sensors and high-speed, low-power wide area networks can have on reducing costs and boosting urban efficiency.

Some of the latest strategies on tackling the challenges of urban planning were showcased at a meeting of around 50 CIOs and CTOs at the Smart Cities Innovation Accelerator, which is sponsored by Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Investments in development hubs fostering a startup culture can also help to accelerate the mass-deployment of digital technologies for improving the experience of living and working in urban environments.
