Google buys solar-powered drone maker Titan Aerospace
Google has acquired the solar-powered drone maker Titan Aerospace to strengthen its ability to deliver wireless internet access to remote areas of the planet.
Details of the price paid by Google for the business are yet to emerge but the 20-person company is expected to continue operating from its base in New Mexico.
All employees will join Google as part of the acquisition deal.
In addition to the potential for Titan's technologies to bring internet access to millions more people, Google has said its solar-powered drones could also improve response capabilities in the context of disaster relief and environmental damage.
Google's purchase of Titan Aerospace comes only weeks after Facebook announced its intention to develop solar-powered drones and satellites capable of delivering internet access to remote regions of the world.
